us in every respect to the authority and jurisdiction of the judges and to the Courts of Justice of the said felony. Through
Her Majesty the Secretary of State for Marine and the Colonies,
that it be intimated to the Governor of Macao that although it was understood that ordinance should have been applying only to that portion of the peninsula of Macao which appertains exclusively to the Chinese empire,
and not to the territory occupied by the Portuguese establishment which is subject to the Supreme Authority of the Portuguese Crown, and governed by the laws of these realms and presided over by its Magistrates; nevertheless,
the diffuse, and general terms in which that Ordinance is conceived may also be construed to comprehend the city of Holy Name of God of Macao, and its Dependencies, which form part of the Portuguese establishment; and as such provisions, if applied to this establishment, may infringe the principles of National Law, and outrage and disturb the rights hitherto exercised by the Portuguese over that territory, Her Majesty has directed Her Minister at the Court of London to apply to the British Government for explanation of the Ordinance above alluded to.
